Missing Hawai‘i Island Hunter Found Safe

A male hunter in his 60s who got lost in native forest off of Kahaulea Street in Volcano was rescued by the Hawaiʻi Fire Department on Saturday, Nov. 18, 2017.

HFD dispatch used e911 to get a satellite position of his location.

HFD helicopter dispatched to the scene and located the hunter, and then extricated him and his dogs out of forest using a Billy Pugh net.

No injury was reported and Emergency Medical Services was not wanted.

The hunter reported that he got lost after following his dogs that were in pursuit of a wild pig into the forest.

A friend said the hunter was lost from approximately 2 p.m.

The friend tried to use his truck’s horn to try and orient the hunter back to Kahaulea Street.

Once it was determined the hunter was unable to hear the horn, the friend initiated 911.

The Hawaiʻi Police Department and the Hawai‘i Department of Land and Natural Resources is investigating.
