‘Abundant Land’ Film Screenings & Discussions

The Hilo Palace Theater presents a film screening and discussions about the movie, Abundant Land: Soil, Seeds, and Sovereignty, on Monday and Tuesday, Nov. 21 and 22, 2017, at 7 p.m. 

Abundant Land is a 60-minute documentary which follows a group of Hawaiian residents on the island of Moloka‘i as they oppose the biotech industries use of their land to test pesticide resistant seeds and work to restore an integrated food system based on ancient Hawaiian farming practices and permaculture.

Monday’s screening will be joined by special guest Eric Drake Weinert Jr. The screening kickstarts Abundant Land’s screening campaign, “Planting Solutions,” a year-long effort to pair the documentary with teachers and practitioners of regenerative agricultural practices.

Drake is the president of the East Hawaiʻi chapter of the Hawaiʻi Farmers Union United. He uses permaculture principles as a guiding framework for his farming and is a well-known instructor of Korean Natural Farming. Come out and hear him share his knowledge on regenerative agriculture.

Tuesday’s screening will be followed with a question and answer discussion with the film’s director, Natasha Florentino.

In addition to the film screenings, Front Yard Food will be giving out heirloom seeds and will have an informational table set up in the lobby.

Doors will open 30 minutes prior to each show.

Tickets are $8 general and $7 for seniors and students.
