The National Weather Service has issued a High Surf Advisory for the north- and east-facing shores of Kohala, Hamakua, Hilo and Puna today through the weekend.
A High Surf Advisory means there is a threat to life and property from the surf.
Surf is forecast to increase up to 16 feet today.
Highest impacts may coincide with the high tide period, which will occur at 10 p.m. tonight.

Oceanfront residents, surfers and beachgoers along the affected shores are advised to be on the alert for possible high and dangerous surf.
Exercise caution due to the unpredictability of huge swells and dangerous surf.
Due to High Surf impacts and debris, the following closures are in effect for Hilo:
Bayfront Highway
Onekahakaha Beach Park
Coconut Island Park
Additional closures may occur without notice. These areas will be reassessed tomorrow morning.

Due to potential high surf impacts and debris, Hilo Bayfront Highway remains closed.
Additional closures of roads and beaches may occur without notice.
