5 Charities Receive Grants from HLCF

Hawaiian Community Assets in Hilo, was one of five Hawaiʻi charities that recently received a $1,000 grant from the Hawaiʻi Life Charitable Fund (HLCF).

The HLCF is the nonprofit fundraising arm of Hawaiʻi Life, the third largest real estate brokerage in the state.

Hawaiʻi Life is locally owned and was founded in 2008 by Kaua‘i based partners Matt Beall and Winston Welborn.

HLCF recipient charities are chosen based on the HLCF’s mission of “working to preserve Hawaiʻi’s beauty and culture by supporting its people.”

“The charities were chosen because they are all working for a cause that is close to our heart at Hawaiʻi Life, which is, of course, to create and provide affordable housing for all Hawaiʻi residents,” said Director Mealoha Kraus. “It is our goal to support initiatives that help break the cycle of homelessness, with a vision that all Hawaiʻi residents can enjoy the security of homeownership.”

The five nonprofit organizations each received a $1,000 check to help further their Hawaiʻi-focused community programming. All grant recipients share a similar focus on affordable housing initiatives throughout the state.

“We have kept our mission intentionally broad so that we can be of assistance to as many different kinds of local nonprofit organizations as possible. It’s our honor to serve and give back to our community,” said Hawaiʻi Life CEO Matt Beall. “HLCF is supported primarily through staff and client donations, and directed by brokers and agents. It is distinct from the corporate giving that Hawaiʻi Life continues to do, through our support and work with the Hawaiian Islands Land Trust, Hawaiʻi Public Radio and the HCS.”

The other non-profit organizations that will receive grants from the HLCF include the Hawaiʻi Homeownership Center, ALEA Bridge, Kahumana and Nā Hale O Maui.

The Hawaiʻi Homeownership Center is an Aloha United Way charity that provides education, information and support to create successful first-time homeowners in Hawaiʻi. Hawaiian Community Assets similarly provides state residents with education and counseling in order to help them secure and sustain permanent housing. With a special focus on West Oahu and the North Shore, ALEA bridge provides community outreach, helping Hawaiʻi residents to break the cycle of homelessness. Based in West Oahu, Kahumana is co-creator of a productive, healthy, farm-based community that supports homeless families, people with disabilities, and youth. Maui-based nonprofit organization Nā Hale O Maui is Hawaiʻi’s first community land trust whose mission is to create affordable housing for Maui residents.
