Thirteen-year police veteran Marcos Santos has been named the Aloha Exchange Club’s August 2017 Officer of the Month.

Officer Santos’ selection followed his actions and assistance with a potential suicide attempt. He was assigned to scout the Hakalau area after reports of a suicidal male in the area. Dispatch provided the party’s name, physical description and vehicle information.

Officer Santos responded and found the man near the center of the Honoliʻi Bridge. Santos carefully approached the man, who appeared highly agitated and indicated that he planned to harm himself. Officer Santos continued to talk with the man for nearly an hour, maintaining a calm, assuring presence and asserting that the police were there to help him. Eventually, the man stepped off the bridge and returned with Officer Santos to safety.
