Hawai‘i has the poorest overall sleep health but the longest life expectancy in the country, according to a new study released by MattressFirm.com.

The study assessed the life expectancy, rates of obesity and sleep health for all 50 states in the U.S.

Hawai‘i ranked worst in the country for sleep health at 56.1 percent, and had the longest life expectancy in the study at 81.3 percent. The findings are unusual because poor sleep health usually correlates with lower life expectancy and higher obesity rates, according to Mattress Firm.

Researchers determined rates of sleep health using the Center for Disease Control’s 2014 Behavioral Risk Surveillance system, which reports the percentage of adults sleeping at least seven hours per night—the minimum recommended amount. A higher score indicated a higher ranking in the study. Life expectancy was measured by the average age a person lives to in each state, with higher scores indicating better health.
