South Hilo Crime Report: Aug. 11–17, 2017

Hawai‘i Police Department’s South Hilo Community Police responded to 10 vehicle thefts and two vehicle break-ins in South Hilo over the seven-day period from Aug.11 to 17, 2017.

Of the 10 vehicles reported stolen, four had been recovered at the time of this report.

No burglaries were reported during this time period.

10 VEHICLE THEFTS

August 12:  Between 4:30 and 10 a.m., unknown suspect(s) removed a black 1999 Honda CRV (HLR611) from the parking lot located near the 300 block of East Makaala Street. Vehicle located on Aug. 15 in Puna.

August 13: Between 3 and 3:40 p.m., a gray 2007 Ford F350 with a white camper shell and UH Hilo decals (SHC795) was stolen near the 900 block of Stainback Highway. Two suspects were observed on surveillance video with their faces covered removing the truck. Truck not located.

August 13: Between 7 and 8:30 p.m., unknown suspect(s) removed a silver 1999 Honda CRV (ZBD051) without permission from a parking lot near the 400 block of Maka‘ala Street. Vehicle located on Aug. 16 in Hilo.

August 13: Between 2 p.m. and Aug. 14 at 1:25 p.m., a white 1999 Honda SUV (JBU146) was stolen from within a parking lot near the 400 block of Hualani Street. Vehicle located on Aug. 15 in Puna.

August 14: Between 5 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., a blue 1997 Honda CRV (GRR965) was removed by unknown suspects from a business parking lot near the 2100 block of Kanoelehua Avenue. Vehicle not located.

August 15: A 23-year-old man was arrested for THEFT 2, after a woman reported that her green 1997 Honda Accord (HHW706) was removed from her residence located near the 100 block of Kaumana Drive. An anonymous party reported seeing a post of the stolen vehicle on Facebook and related that it may be located on Hilinai Street in Hilo. Upon officers making checks at the residence, they observed a vehicle parked fronting that residence bearing plates HHW706, with the hood open, appearing to be under active mechanical repair. The suspect was located approximately 25 feet away, hiding in the bushes of the residence, and observed with black grease resembling the grease from the vehicle on his hands and clothing.

August 15: Between 7:30 p.m. and Aug.16 at 4 p.m., unknown suspect(s) stole a silver 2000 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck (HZT931) from a detached garage located on Malama Place. Vehicle not located.

August 16: Between 2:45 and 6 a.m., unknown suspect(s) stole a green 1999 Honda CRV ( HBM056). The vehicle was removed fronting a residence on Hoaloha Street. The vehicle has black primer on the front passenger side door and extends partially to the rear passenger panel. Vehicle not located.

August 16: Between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., unknown suspect(s) removed a red 2003 Honda CBR street bike from a business parking lot located near the 100 block of Puainako Street. The license plate and vin number are unknown. The street bike is described as red with extra wide frame sliders, side scrapes on the clutch cover and on the right side tail area. Bike not located.

August 16: Between 8 p.m and Aug. 17 at 8 a.m., unknown suspect(s) removed a white 2001 Toyota Tacoma (HAY313) from a residence near the 200 block of W. Kahaopea Street. Truck not located.

2 VEHICLE BREAK-INS

August 13: Between 3 and 3:40 p.m., unknown suspects gained entry into a gray 2002 Toyota Corolla (HGA200) while it was parked near the 900 block of Stainback Highway by throwing a rock in the rear passenger window, causing it to break.

August 15: Between 10 and 10:30 a.m., a 33-year-old woman reported that while at a business address located on Pu‘uhonu Place, she observed an unknown male in the driver’s seat of her 2000 Honda CRV.  The woman stated that after yelling at the man, he fled with
three other individuals in a small silver sedan. According to woman, there was no damage
to the vehicle and no items were removed.
