Study: Hawai‘i Ranks No. 1 in Nation for Theft

According to the findings of a new study released by SafeHome.org, Hawai‘i ranks No. 1 in the nation for theft across the board.

The study analyzed FBI data to assess the number of various items stolen per capita, per state in 2015.

Hawai‘i ranked first in all categories including firearms, clothing, consumable goods, jewelry and precious metals, money, household goods, livestock, electronics, office equipment and miscellaneous items. Most goods were classified as miscellaneous, which include items like pregnancy tests.

The study also revealed Hawai‘i had the most pickpocketing in 2015 with 246 reported incidents for every 100,000 residents. The runner up for pickpocketing crimes in 2015 was Washington, D.C., at 173 for every 100,000 residents.

To determine these results, researchers analyzed the FBI 2015 Uniform Crime Reporting database from the National Archive of Criminal Justice Data.

In 2014, the FBI reported a robbery every 1.6 minutes in the U.S., a burglary every 18.2 seconds and a larceny-theft–such as pickpocketing or purse snatching–every 5.4 seconds, according to SafeHome.org. The estimated cost of property crimes that year was approximately $14.3 billion.
