Hilo Recycling & Reuse Center to Open June 5
The Department of Environmental Management will open its Hilo Recycling and Reuse Center at the Hilo Transfer Station on Monday, June 5, 2017.
The latest county reuse center will be open for business daily from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Ho‘olaulima Road, on the makai side before the transfer station.
The following types of materials accepted for reuse include, but are not limited to:
- Books
- Clothing and fabric
- Construction materials
- Crafts & craft supplies
- Garden/farm items
- Home building materials
- Latex base paints
- Office equipment (non-computer or electronics)
- Recreational items
- School supplies
- Small furniture and furnishings
- Small household appliances
- Tools
- Working appliances (based on available space)
The five existing Hawai‘i County Reuse Centers, in Kealakehe, Kea‘au, Pāhoa, Keauhou and Waimea, provide county residents with an opportunity to easily donate items that might otherwise have gone into the landfill. Useful items are then available at an affordable price.
The first reuse center, funded by the EPA, was opened in 2003 at the Kea‘au Transfer Station.
