Offroad Tour of Hawai‘i Island’s Southeast Coast

Kona Historical Society (KHS) is offering an award-winning Jeep Trip Program tour of the southern coast of Hawai‘i Island on Saturday, May 27.  

The tour will be led by John Replogle of The Nature Conservancy and Naturalist Bobby Camara, taking participants on a 4-wheel drive excursion of Waiohinu. The area is not accessible to the general public, and can only be reached by foot, boat or 4-wheel drive.

Learn about the area with knowledgeable guides including local historians, naturalists and cultural practitioners. The tour will explore and discuss extraordinary geologic features, rare botanical eco-systems and jetsam–oceanic trash carried to the shores of Kamilo where native Hawaiians used to gather driftwood for building canoes.

Participants will enjoy lunch on the beach and have the opportunity to conduct a beach clean up. Guests will need to bring their own lunch. KHS will provide light refreshments.

The cost for the tour is $95 per person ($115 after May 22). Anyone can join the excursion by becoming a member of Kona Historical Society. Visit store.konahistorical.org to become a member and reserve a spot in the tour.

A high-clearance, 4-wheel drive vehicle is necessary to participate. If you don’t have one but would like to attend, KHS may be able to accommodate you by arranging carpools with other participants.
