Hawaii Community Correctional Center (HCCC) called Hawaii Police at approximately 1:20 p.m.on Wednesday, April 5, to report the escape of pre-trial detainee Howard Hinds.
Hinds was outside in the recreation yard when it was reported to correctional staff that he was seen running away from the facility.

An immediate lockdown was ordered.
Hawaii Police located him at 2:05 p.m. on Omao Street, approximately .75 miles west of the facility.
They processed Hinds for Escape 2 and returned him to HCCC.

How he escaped from the facility is under investigation.
The temporary lockdown was lifted within 30 minutes. No programs were affected.
Hinds is awaiting trial for Criminal Contempt and Failure to Appear in Court.

A 26-year-old male inmate from the Hawaiʻi Community Correctional Center in Hilo was arrested this afternoon, April 5, after reportedly escaping from the facility.
Responding to the 1:23 p.m. report of a male inmate running from the facility, South Hilo Patrol officers located the inmate hiding behind a residence on Omao Street, approximately .75 miles from the correctional center.
Howard Hinds, also known as Kaulana Hinds and Manoa Kamau, was taken into custody without incident at about 2:05 p.m. for the offense of second-degree escape.
He was returned to the custody of the Department of Public Safety and is being held at the Hawaiʻi Community Correctional Center while detectives from the Area I Criminal Investigations Section continue with the investigation.
