UPDATE: Strong Thunderstorm Alert Issued for Big Island

UPDATE: Feb. 22, 2017, 2:58 p.m.

At 2:53  p.m., HST, a strong thunderstorm was located near Pōhakuloa Training Area along Saddle Road, or 26 miles east of Kailua-Kona.

Winds in excess of 30 mph and pea size hail are possible with this storm.

Locations impacted include Bradshaw Army Air Field, Mauna Kea Summit, Pōhakuloa Training Area
and Pōhakuloa Camp.

Frequent cloud to ground lightning is occurring with this storm.

Lightning can strike 10 miles away from a thunderstorm.

Seek a safe
shelter inside a building or vehicle.

National Weather Service in Honolulu has released a severe weather alert on Wednesday, Feb. 22.

At 1:29 p.m., a strong thunderstorm was located 12 miles east of Kealakekua, or 17 miles east of Kailua-Kona.

The storm is nearly stationary.

Winds in excess of 30 mph and pea-size hail are possible with this storm.

Locations impacted include Pōhakuloa Training Area and Honaunau.

Frequent cloud to ground lightning is occurring with this storm.

Lightning can strike 10 miles away from a thunderstorm.

Seek a safe shelter inside a building or vehicle.
