Gale Warning: ʻAlenuihāhā channel through 6 p.m. tonight.

Special Weather Statement: There is potential for strong thunderstorms this afternoon over leeward slopes and interior parts of the island. Cloud to surface lightning strikes, gusty winds, small hail and low visibility due to heavy rain are possible. The summits could also see snowfall. When thunder roars, go indoors.

Big Island Surf Forecast

Hilo side: Wave heights are forecast to be head high to overhead today.

Kona side: Wave heights are expected to be knee/waist high today.

South: Wave heights are expected to be knee/thigh high today.

A new west-northwest is forecast to build Thursday and ease on Friday. A stronger west-northwest is forecast for the weekend.

Nothing significant expected out of the South Pacific.

Keep in mind, surf heights are measured on the face of the wave from trough to crest. Heights vary from beach to beach, and at the same beach, from break to break.
