‘Hands On History’ Activities in March

Kona Historical Society is holding its Hands On History program at Kona Coffee Living History Farm in Captain Cook every Wednesday and Friday at 11 a.m. in March.

The program gives visitors and local residents alike an opportunity to learn and experience activities that were central to the daily lives of Kona’s Japanese immigrants and coffee pioneers during the 1920s and 1940s. Activities include coffee roasting, medicinal herb gardening, Japanese calligraphy, Japanese pickling, lauhala weaving, mochi making and tofu making.  

The March program schedule for Hands On History is as follows:

• Wednesday, March 1 – Homegrown Remedies: Kona’s Tradition of Medicinal Gardening

• Friday, March 3 – A Japanese Girl’s Day Tradition: Mochi Making!

• Wednesday, March 8 – Fresh Off the Press: Making Tofu in the Family Kitchen   

• Friday, March 10 – Backyard Groceries: Sustainability in the Kitchen Garden

• Wednesday, March 15 – Balanced Bento: Pickling as a Mainstay of the Japanese Table

• Friday, March 17 – Art & Language: Learning Japanese with Calligraphy

• Wednesday, March 22 – Homegrown Remedies: Kona’s Tradition of Medicinal Gardening

• Friday, March 24 – Beans in the Skillet: Coffee Roasting at Home

• Wednesday, March 29 – Backyard Groceries: Sustainability in the Kitchen Garden

• Friday, March 31 – Weaving Tools & Treasures: Lauhala on a Kona Coffee Farm

Through Hands On History, Kona Historical Society hopes to preserve and perpetuate the cultural traditions and history of Kona’s coffee industry and people.

“Hands On History provides a unique opportunity for visitors and residents alike to learn and practice traditional activities that were important to the daily lives of our Kona ancestors,” said Gavin Miculka, Kona Historical Society assistant program director and Kona Coffee Living History Farm museum manager.
