Hazardous Waste Collection Dates Announced
The County of Hawai‘i Department of Environmental Management has announced upcoming dates that it will be accepting residential household hazardous waste (HHW) at local transfer stations.
HHW will be accepted between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 4, 2017, at the Waimea Recycling and Transfer Station, and Sunday, March 5, 2017, at the Pāhoa Recycling and Transfer Station. Collection events will also be held on June 3, 2017 in Hilo and June 10, 2017, in Kailua-Kona.
These events will collect household, self-hauled waste only (excluding tires and electronics). Business, government agency or farm wastes will not be accepted.
The county describes some types of acceptable HHW as automotive fluids, used batteries, fluorescent lights and pesticides. For the two upcoming dates, latex paint will only be accepted at the Waimea event. A more complete list of accepted HHW is available online, along with more information on solid waste disposal and recycling.
The County of Hawai‘i holds these collection events in an effort to dispose of acceptable HHW in a way that protects public health and the environment.
