Wastewater Spill from Hilo’s Pauka‘a Station
The County of Hawai‘i Wastewater Division in Hilo has reported a spill at the Pauka‘a Sewage Pump Station in Hilo today.
Approximately 250 gallons of untreated wastewater were released on surrounding grounds; 5,000 gallons were released to the shoreline between 8:02 and 8:50 a.m. this morning.
According to the department, the pump station was unable to accommodate abnormally high flows to the station as a result of high rainfall in the area.
The surrounding areas were disinfected and washed down. While the shoreline area in the vicinity of the spill consists of steep cliffs, contaminated water signs were placed in the area of the spill and will remain in place through the weekend, as directed by the state Department of Health.
