High Wind Warning, High Surf Advisory

The National Weather Service in Honolulu issued a High Wind Warning at 3:31 a.m. on Sunday,  Jan. 22, 2017, which will remain in effect until noon today for locally strong northeasterly trade winds.

Very strong northeast winds will continue through the morning along and behind a front near the Big Island. These winds will accelerate over terrain and down lee slopes. Winds will begin to weaken for
some portions of the state by this afternoon.

Winds are expected at 25 to 40 mph with localized gusts to 60 mph.

The strongest winds will be focused in the leeward Kohala area, Waimea to the Kawaihae corridor, western Saddle areas and north of Kailua-Kona in the north Kona District.

Winds this strong can result in damaged roofs, broken and falling tree branches, downed power poles and
power lines resulting in interruptions to power, downed trees and flying debris if outdoor items are not properly tied down.

Residents should bring in or tie down any loose outdoor items.

A High Surf Advisory is also in effect until 6 p.m. HST Monday, Jan. 23.

Surf along east-facing shores of the Big Island are expected at 10 to 14 feet today, lowering to 8 to 12 feet
tonight and 6 to 9 feet on Monday.

Expect strong breaking waves, shore break and strong currents making swimming dangerous.

Heed all advice given by ocean safety officials and exercise caution. Be prepared for water splashing onto coastal roads along east-facing shores.
