Three Big Island Students Win Art Contest

Three Hawai‘i Island students were among the winners of AlohaCare’s 14th annual Children’s Art Contest.

Saysha Pacheco-Alcosiba of Connections Public Charter School in Hilo took second place and Dylyn Jarneski of Keaukaha Elementary School, also in Hilo, took third place in the third and fourth grade category.

Ailana Graylin of Hilo Union School took second place in the fifth and sixth grade category.

AlohaCare also congratulates the teachers of each student, Jerri Potter of Connections Public Charter School, Lurline Agbayani of Keaukaha Elementary School and Mimi Tincher of Hilo Union School.

AlohaCare has given away more than $2,000 in prize money. The first, second and third place winners in each of the four grade categories received $100, $75 and $50, respectively.

The art contest was open to students statewide in four grade levels: kindergarten, first and second grade, third and fourth grade, and fifth and sixth grade. The students submitted drawings based on one of four health-related topics: preventive health, mental health, nutrition and physical activities.

“We’re committed to improving the health and wellness of communities across our state,” said John McComas, AlohaCare’s president and CEO. “This contest is a way for our keiki to learn about health and wellness, represent their school, and win cash prizes for themselves and their teachers.”

The drawings will be featured in AlohaCare’s 2017 calendar, to be released in December 2016.
