Laupahoehoe Public Library will host Beyond the Fear, a documentary about rat lungworm disease, on Aug. 8 at 6 p.m. Hilo Public Library will show the film on Aug. 13 from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.
This 30-minute documentary encompasses both a poetic and scientific approach to the threat of the disease on Hawai‘i Island.
The documentary follows three individuals who have contracted rat lungworm, enabling audiences to understand more about its severity and the potential threat that this disease presents.
By utilizing this film as a tool for discussion, Filmmaker Maria Karin Walczuk, hopes to raise awareness about some of the difficulties this disease poses to local communities.
Walczuk studied at Kua O Ka Lā and Connections Charter School and is a 2014 graduate of the UH Hilo Performing Arts program, mentored by Professor Jackie Pualani Johnson.
Walczuk will further continue her film craft this autumn in a documentary film program abroad.
Walczuk welcomes questions for her or her father who contracted this disease and plays a central character in this film.
