UPDATE: Kona Ranching & Cowboy Exhibit Extended

Due to overwhelming demand from the public, Kona Historical Society will extend the length of the “Kona Ranching & Kona Cowboys: Our Way of Life” exhibit until Aug. 13.

“Kona Ranching & Kona Cowboys: Our Way of Life” will be on exhibit from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays, in the H.N. Greenwell Store Museum.

The museum will close its doors June 17 for a couple of weeks as the Kona Historical Society prepares for the special exhibit. The regular exhibit, offered Mondays and Tuesdays, and the living history program on Thursdays in the museum are temporarily discontinued.

The H.N. Greenwell Store Museum will reopen with its regular programming on Aug. 8.

This Kona Historical Society exhibit is part two of a culmination project that shares Kona’s largely hidden history of cowboys and ranching.

The exhibit will feature homestead life, families and tools, giving an intimate look into the people, traditions and ties that remain vital and strong in Kona, now, more than two centuries after cattle and horses first came to the area.

The Kona Historical Society received Grant-in-Aid funding from the State of Hawai‘i for this project and support from this exhibit’s sponsors, ChoiceMART, Palani Ranch, Robby Hind, Jimmy Greenwell, McCandless Ranch and West Hawaii Today.

Admission to this three-week-long ranching exhibit is by donation.

The Kona Historical Society is a community-based, 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to collecting, preserving and sharing the history of the Kona Districts and their larger context in the history of Hawai‘i.
