Free Shredding in Kona Offered as Part of ‘Shred Fest 2016’

Free document shredding will be offered in Kailua-Kona on Saturday, April 30 as part of “Shred Fest 2016.”

AARP Hawai’i and Access Corporation in Kona have joined together to sponsor the one-day shredding event.

From 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., the public can visit the Big Island Record and Destruction Center, located on Hui Koa Drive in Kailua-Kona, to receive free shredding of personal financial documents and other sensitive records.

Old tax forms, bank statements, and other sensitive paper work will be confidentially destroyed.

“Financial fraud causes millions of dollars is losses each year,” said AARP Hawai’i State Director Barbara Kim Stanton. “Now that tax-filing season is behind us, we encourage taxpayers to do a spring cleaning of their old financial documents and other records.”

Last year, Hawai’i residents registered more than 6,200 complains about identity theft, fraud, and other consumer complaints with the Federal Trade Commission.

The event will follow a drive through and drop-off set-up with unloading service.

Members of the public are not required to be AARP members and paperclips and staples do not have to be removed.

The service is limited to four boxes or bags of paper per vehicle occupant.
