A Small Craft Advisory is posted for all Hawaii County waters through 6 a.m. Friday for rough seas up to 12 feet.

A High Surf Advisory is posted for the north facing shores of the Big Island through 6 p.m. Thursday. Surf along north facing shores is expected to build to 10 to 15 feet peaking Wednesday morning.

Big Island Surf Forecast

Hilo side: Wave heights are expected chest/head high today with overhead sets from time to time.

Kona side: Wave heights knee/waist high or less.

South: Breaks open to the trade swell could get up to waist/head high. Otherwise, south-southwest is around knee high.
Our current north-northwest swell is expected to continue fading through Saturday. An even larger northwest swell is expected over the weekend. The swell should fill in quickly overnight Saturday and peak Sunday morning.

Our current south-southwest is mainly leftovers today.

Trade swell continues but it’s bumpy and sloppy for most spots.

Keep in mind, surf heights are measured on the face of the wave from trough to crest. Heights vary from beach to beach, and at the same beach, from break to break.
