The Hawai’i County Fire Department responded to a Hookele Street house fire in Kona on Friday night.

Fire Fighters arrived on scene at about 9:28 p.m., where they found a two-story wooden multi-family home over 50 percent involved with flames and its roof collapsed.

The fire at the 4,500 square feet structure wasn’t fully extinguished until 5 a.m. Saturday. Fire personnel say that the extended length of the extinguishment was due to a lack of water availability.

Fire fighters use three attack lines with a water shuttle operation since there was no fire hydrant available to provide relief. In addition the home, located at the end of the roadway, was hard to access due to a one-lane concrete driveway.

HFD officials say that all the occupants of the home were able to exit on their own and did not sustain any injuries.

Total loss is estimated to be $350,000. The cause of the fire is currently being investigated.

American Red Cross Hawai’i volunteers were scheduled to meet with the affected family Saturday morning. Emergency needs, including food, shelter, and clothing, will be assessed and assisted with.
