HPA Community Book Club
Hawai’i Preparatory Academy’s next community book club is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 3.
The club is free, open to the public, and will take place in the Dyer Memorial Library, located on the academy’s upper campus.
This month’s book selection, “All the Light We Cannot See” by Anthony Doerr, has received numerous awards, including the 2015 Pulitzer Prize for fiction and the 2015 Carnegie Medal for Excellence in fiction.
“All the Light We Cannot See” follows the life of Marie Laure, who lives with her father in Paris. Lee lives within walking distance of the Museum of Natural History, where her father works as the master of locks.
When Laure is just six-year-old, she loses her eyesight and her father builds her a model of their neighborhood so she can memorize it with her fingers and navigate the real streets with her feet and cane.
In June 1940, when the Germans occupy Paris, Laure and her father flee to Saint-Malo on the Brittany coast, where Laure’s agoraphobic uncle lives in a tall house by the sea wall.
During the same time in Germany, an orphan boy, Werner, grows up with his little sister, Jutta. Both are amazed by a crude radio Werner finds. Werner goes on to become a master at building and fixing radios, which leads him to become a highly specialized tracker of the Resistance. Werner travels through the heart of Hitler Youth to the far-flung outskirts of Russia and later into Saint-Malo, where he meets Laure.
Light refreshments will be served at the meeting, but book club attendees are invited to bring a snack to share.
