KCH Temporarily Relocates Emergency Entrance
Kona Community Hospital began its renovations Wednesday to expand its existing Emergency Department.
As part of the construction, certain areas, including the old Admitting Department and Emergency Triage walk-in areas, are closed.
KCH officials have opened new temporary areas for visitors and patients to enter through. The hospital’s main entrance, located on the north end of the building between the radiation oncology clinic and the hospital, will act as the temporary Emergency Department entrance.
Patient parking for the Emergency Department will also be relocated to a parking lot closer to the main entrance. Signage will mark the area.
“This construction project is part of an on-going effort to maintain and improve our facilities,” KCH CEO Jay Kreuzer said.
Almost 21,000 patients visit the KCH emergency department every year. Hospital officials say the current location of the department has provided constraints due to its size for years. Patient wait times and overall efficiency is expected to improve with the expansion.
Capital Improvement Project money has been received by the hospital, allowing for facility renovations. The money is solely for the purpose of maintenance and facility improvements and is not able to be used for hospital operations.
“We’re very grateful to our State Legislatures for their efforts to obtain CIP funding from the State,” Kreuzer said.
