KAPA Hawaiian FM morning personalities Jaz and Ka’ea welcomed Makana, a Grammy-nominated guitar player from Oahu, to the KAPA Cafe.

Makana is a product of some of the great slack key guitar players the islands have ever seen, working with legends Bobby Moderow Jr. and Uncle Sonny Chillingworth. He has taken the things learned through them and evolved them into his own style, “Slack Rock,” working in rock, bluegrass, and blues styles to create his unique brand of guitar playing.

Nationally, he has gained attention for his work on “The Descendants” movie soundtrack and was recognized by Rolling Stone for his song “We Are the Many,” a tune that would symbolize the Occupy movement across the country. He performed that song at the APEC World Leaders’ Dinner, hosted by President Barack Obama.
