HSPLS Presents ‘Super Hero Academy’

With the keiki out of school and the official start of summer just around the corner, the Hawai’i State Public Library System’s 2015 Children’s Summer Reading Program is well underway.

From May 31 through July 18, HSPLS libraries across the state are participating in the state’s annual free reading programs, featuring the theme “Heroes.”

In celebration of the program and theme, the HSPLS has teamed up with HouseMart Ace and HouseMart Ben Franklin to present “Super Hero Academy,” a free event accompanying the reading program that will take place at five Big Island public libraries.

Particiapants over the age of 5 who are accompanied by parent or caregiver can participate in the “Hardware Science” program, which will feature demonstrations, interactive stations, and a craft activity. The academy event will last an hour and participating children will receive a stamped card with a record of completion of the three activities and a Super Hero Academy Graduation Certificate. The completion of the workshop will also give children a chance to enter a prize drawing.

Children are encouraged to discover the superheroes within themselves as they read and learn about real life, fantasy, and everyday heroes during the summer-long reading program. The children’s sub-theme is “Every Hero Has a Story.” Children completing their reading goals will receive incentives like school supplies, treats, an activity kit, or other items.

The following locations will host the “Super Hero Academy” program:

Kea’au Public and School Library: June 24, at 2 p.m.

North Kohala Public Library: June 25, 10 a.m.

Thelma Parker Memorial Public and School Library: June 25, 3 p.m.

Mt. View Public and School Library: July 1, 10 a.m.

Kailua-Kona Public Library: July 8, 3 p.m.

If a sign language interpreter or other special accommodation is needed, contact the hosting library as soon as possible.

Teens and adults are  also invited to participate in the HSPLS Summer Reading Program, where they will follow the sub-themes “Unmask!” and “Escape the Ordinary,” respectively.
