‘Plastic Ocean’ Selected for Kona Book Club Meeting

This month Kona Library Book Club selection features the non-fiction title Plastic Ocean, written by Charles Moore. The group’s next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, June 16 at 11:30 a.m.

Moore discovered the “Great Pacific Garbage Patch,” a large floating mass in the Pacific Ocean made up of tiny plastic particles entangled in debris.

After his initial discovery, Moore spent decades investigating plastic production, distribution, and chemical makeup. His investigation led him to uncover the truth about the pollution occurring in the sea and elsewhere that was more damaging than initially thought.

In Moore’s book, he chronicles his attempts to mitigate the effect of the plastic bits that make up the “Great Pacific Garbage Patch,” noting that the ingestion of the plastic by sea creatures works its way up the food chain, and in turn, poisons humans.

Light refreshments will be served at the club event.

Each month the club, sponsored by the Friends of the Libraries, Kona, meets on the lanai of the Kailua-Kona Public Library. July’s selection is Wave by Sonali Deraniyagala.
