HI-PAL Holds “Click it or Ticket” Tournament in Hilo
The Hawai’i Isle Police Activities League, in conjunction with the Andrews Basketball Association and Waiakea Intermediate REACH program, completed its “Click it or Ticket” high school and intermediate basketball championships this past weekend at Andrews Gym in Hilo.
In the championship game, the Waiakea Warriors defeated Paiea 51-49, thanks to Calvin Mattos’ game-winner with 23 seconds left in the game. Paiea missed a chance to win the game with a three-pointer at the buzzer.
Mattos led the way with a game-high 23 points, while teammate Kahinu Alapai added 12 points. Bayley Manliguis scored 14 points for Paiea.
Third place went to St. Joseph, who defeated Hilo 57-42. Manato Fukuda led the way with 16 points while Cole DeSilva added 12.
Besides basketball, the tournament provided an opportunity to educate parents and children about seat belt use.
“Each participant and their parent pledged to use their seat belts,” said Sergeant Robert Pauole of the Hawai’i Police Department’s Traffic Services Section. “As with the NHTSA national campaign, we ask parents to make sure that their kids are consistently and properly wearing their seat belts every time the car is moving and we urge parents to never give up until their kids buckle up.”
Ten teams and 107 players participated in the event.
Members of the championship team include Mattos, Alapai, Wes Amuimuia, Ken Bugado, Cameron Carvalho-Chinen, Noah Ferreira, Nigel Henry, Shaun Kojima, and Justin Tavares.
