HPA’s Ewing Named to HHSAA Hall of Honor
Hawai’i Preparatory Academy’s Gabbie Ewing will be one of 12 outstanding high school seniors named to the 2015 Enterprise/Hawai’i High School Athletic Association during a banquet next month.
Over 80 applications from around the state were submitted to the HHSAA. A 16-person selection committee, made up of media members, coaches, and athletic administrators, narrowed down the applications to the final 12 over two days of voting this past weekend.
Ewing starred in two different sports during her four year career at HPA. She was named Big Island Interscholastic Federation Division II Player of the Year in girls volleyball during her junior season. She was a part of two league championship teams in that sport and reached the state championship match in 2013. She was also named to the New City Nissan/HHSAA Division II All-Tournament Team twice.
Soccer was the highlight sport for Ewing, however. She made the All-BIIF first team in all four years she competed, capped by a BIIF Division II Player of the Year award in her senior season. Her team won all four league championship matches that she competed in and participated in all four Outrigger Resorts/HHSAA Division II Girls Soccer Championship matches, winning the last two.
Ewing also dabbled in softball and track and field during her time at HPA.
Concordia University in Portland, Ore. will give Ewing a chance to continue her soccer career. While there, she will major in Kinesiology and Pre-Athletic Training. She plans to remain in school after graduating from Concordia, with a goal of obtaining a master’s degree in Athletic Training.
The last HPA athlete to be inducted into the Hall of Honor was Shane Brostek in 2012.
Each of the 12 inductees will receive a $2,000 scholarship, made possible by Enterprise Holdings, which oversees Enterprise Rent-A-Car, National Car Rental, Alamo Rent A Car, and Enterprise CarShare.
An induction banquet will be held on June 7 at Dole Cannery Square’s Pomaika’i Ballroom. The guest speaker will be Francesca Weems, a 2005 graduate of Kealakehe High School and an inductee into the Hall of Honor. She currently works as a sports anchor and reporter at Hawai’i News Now.
