Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park Featuring Featherwork Art Exhibit

Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park will add to its current lava lake attraction with an open-house art exhibit now through May 16.

Artist-in-residence Rick Makanaaloha Kia‘imeaokekanaka San Nicolas will be displaying his impressive feather art Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. at the 1932 Administration Building, also known as the ‘Ōhi‘a Wing.

San Nicolas recently received the title of Ke Kumu Hulu Nui, or feather master of ancient Hawaiian featherwork, by Kumu Hula Kaha‘i Topolinski.  His work replicates the finely-crafted regalia worn by Hawaiian royalty and warriors.  San Nicolas honed his skill through research, talking with elders, and by listening to others who want to share their story, traditions, and process.  More of his work is also on display at Volcano House.
