MERRIE MONARCH 2015

April 5 – 11, 2015

 

The 2015 Merrie Monarch Hula Festival is an international Hula competition in Hilo, Hawaii. The festival starts with the Ho’olaule’a on Easter Sunday at the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium and ends with a parade through Hilo town and final evening competition on Saturday.

Hula and Hawaiian events are held around Hilo town during the week of the festival. Below is a preliminary schedule for 2015 Merrie Monarch events.

MERRIE MONARCH FESTIVAL PRELIMINARY SCHEDULE

Sunday April 5

    Ho’olaule’a ( Music Festival) 9am – 4pm at the Hilo Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium. The music festival is a celebration of hula and Hawaiian chants performed by local Halaus and students. The event has food, drinks, snacks for sale as well as official T-shirts and the program guide.

Monday April 6

  • Hula Free Demonstration: Noon Hilo Naniloa Hotel
  • Hula Free Demonstration: 1PM Hilo Hawaiian Hotel
  • Native Hawaiian Art Exhibit: 10AM to 6PM – Merrie Monarch Festival Office
  • Lei Contest: display of kahiko and auana leis at Wailoa Arts and Cultural Center

Tuesday April 7

  • Hula Free Demonstration: Noon Hilo Naniloa Hotel
  • Hula Free Demonstration: 1PM Hilo Hawaiian Hotel
  • Native Hawaiian Art Exhibit: 10AM to 6PM – Merrie Monarch Festival Office
  • Lei Contest: display of kahiko and auana leis at Wailoa Arts and Cultural Center.

Wednesday April 8

  • Hawaiian Invitational Arts & Crafts Fair: 8:30AM to 5PM – Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium
  • Merrie Monarch Festival Workshops: ‘Imiloa Astronomy Center
  • Hula Free Demonstration: 11AM Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium
  • Hula Free Demonstration: Noon Hilo Naniloa Hotel
  • Hula Free Demonstration: 1PM Hilo Hawaiian Hotel
  • Native Hawaiian Art Exhibit: 10AM to 6PM – Merrie Monarch Festival Office
  • Lei Contest: display of kahiko and auana leis at Wailoa Arts and Cultural Center
  • Ho’ike Night Free exhibition : Edith Kanaka’ole Multipurpose Stadium
    is the same stadium where they hold the Merrie Monarch Hula competitions and it’s free. Open seating, prime seats go super fast, so you need to get in line very early (1pm) to get a good seat. Gates are closed during The entrance of the Royal Court and the Pule. Reopening after.

Thursday April 9

Saturday April 11

  • Merrie Monarch Royal Parade : starts in downtown Hilo at 10:30AM.

  • Group Hula ‘Auana Competition: 6PM Edith Kanaka’ole Multipurpose Stadium – tickets needed.
