Security Measures Improved at Kona Community Hospital

Kona Community Hospital is in the process of better securing its facility, thanks to a recently completed security needs assessment.

A security consultant was brought in to do the assessment. Hospital-wide security efforts will be made, but hospital officials say that the Obstetrics /unit was a logical starting point. The OB Unit, which includes the maternity unit and nursery, is now locked at all times to ensure the safety and security of patients.

“We’re proud to be following guidelines outlined by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children for the prevention of infant abduction,” said Sally Robertson, Obstetrics Nurse Manager.

Robertson also noted that “24/7 secured units are an industry standard for maternity units and nurseries.”

The new electronic system will enhance infant security, in addition to other features already in place, hospital officials say.

Tap-in and tap-out ID badges will allow authorized staff members to enter and exit the area using electronic card readers. Unauthorized staff and visitors will be required to use an ask-in and ask-out video intercom system that was newly installed.

State capital improvement funds have been used to fund the project for the 94-bed, full-service hospital.
