HPA’s Ka Makani Players Present “Lost in Yonkers”

Neil Simon’s 1991 Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winning play “Lost in Yonkers” will be performed by Hawai’i Preparatory Academy’s Ka Makani Players.

The play, which was once commented on by the New York Post as “the best play Simon ever wrote,” will be performed at the Gates Performing Arts Center at 7 p.m., Feb. 26 through Feb. 28.

Set in 1942 Yonkers, the story follows Bella, a 35-year-old woman with an intellectual disability. Bella lives at home with her mother, stern Grandma Kurnitz. As the play gets started, Kurnitz’s son Eddie drops two of his young sons on Grandma’s doorstep, as Eddie is financially strapped and taking to the road as a salesman. The boys are then left with Grandma, Bella and her secret romance, and their Uncle Louie, a small-time hood in a strange new world called Yonkers.

Marina Tichotsky, the HPA theatre instructor, will act as director and costume designer for the play. Lighting design is by Jared Terpak.

Cast includes Wolfgang Brennan as Jay, Colby Camero as Arty, Ian Laude as Eddie, Christine Ocheltree as Bella, Jackson Streiter as Grandma Kurnitz, Miller White as Louie, and Sarah Emmons as Gert.

Tickets for the play will only be available at the door. The cost is $10 for adults and $5 for students.
