Matson released a statement Thursday announcing that it will be lowering fuel surcharges.

The statement attributes the lower surcharges to a recent decline in bunker fuel prices.

Surcharge fees will lower by five percent for its Hawai’i and Guam/CNMI services.

Currently, the Hawai’i fuel surcharge is 42.5 percent. That amount will be reduced to 37.5 percent and the Guam/CNMI surcharge that is currently 43 percent will be reduced to 38 percent. The new fee percentages will go into effect Sunday, Nov. 2.

“We are pleased to be able to make this downward adjustment to our fuel surcharge, which for most customers represents a reduction in shipping costs ranging from $100 to $175 per container,” said Dave Hoppes, Senior Vice President of Ocean Services.

In the statement, Hoppes continued, “We have been encouraged by the recent moderation in bunker fuel prices, and remain focused on diligently exploring way in which we can maximized fuel efficiency for our fleet. Matson has made a practice of giving 30 day notice for upward rate adjustments, but passes on downward adjustments to our customers as soon as possible. We will continue to monitor fuel costs and adjust the surcharge accordingly.”

Additional questions can be answered by account executives or the Matson Support Center.
