Kea`au HS Announces Athletic Award Winners

Kea`au High School held its Spring Athletic Awards ceremony Tuesday, putting an bow on the 2013-2014 athletic season for the Cougars.

Kea`au holds three different awards presentations during the year, following the Fall, Winter, and Spring seasons.

Zephaniah Pavao and Daysha Alameda were named Male and Female Athletes of the Year during Tuesday’s awards ceremony. Charlie Belmes and Taylor Pocock were named Male and Female Scholar Athletes of the Year, while Edgar Ventura and Brianna Cadaoas were given the Athletic Director’s Award. The Male and Female Rookie of the Year Awards went to Jo-Joe Villa and Aiyana Wessels.

Pavao earned the Male Athlete of the Year award after an impressive season in judo. He was the Big Island Interscholastic Federation champion in the 285-pound weight class. He won the Hawai`i High School Athletic Association Judo Championships on Oahu in the same weight class, defeating Kalani’s James Lawhn.

Alameda, the Female Athlete of the Year at Kea`au, was the BIIF track and field individual champion in the high jump competition. She finished in a tie for ninth place in the same event at the Island Movers/HHSAA Track and Field Championships.
