Save $$ On Energy, Switch To LED Bulbs

If you don’t have the time and resources to install a whole new solar energy system, a smaller investment can still bring a big return on your energy consumption, according to Cree Inc., a national manufacturer of LED lighting.

Spokeswoman Hannah Olson said simply swapping out CFLs and incandescents for LED bulbs will lower your electricity bill.

“Instant, in-store rebates through Hawaii Energy, for example, are making LED bulbs even more affordable for Hawaii residents,” Olson said in an email release.

A 60-Watt replacement LED Bulb costs as low as $3.97 (down from $14.27) at The Home Depot, she said, and in about six months the LED bulb pays for itself.

Look at the math, said Olson: “It costs about $1 a year to power a Cree LED 60W replacement bulb, versus about $7 per year to power a 60-Watt incandescent (based on the average run time of 3 hours a day). Considering that the average home has 40 bulb sockets and Cree bulbs last 25 times longer than typical incandescent light bulbs, consumers could save about $240 each year.”

Hawaii Energy is providing $6-$8 instant rebates on all LEDs at participating retailers throughout the state. No application is needed.

Hawaii Energy is a ratepayer-funded conservation and efficiency program administered by Leidos Engineering, LLC (formerly known as SAIC) under contract with the Hawaii Public Utilities Commission.
