Wave Debris Clean-Up Scheduled at Kona Park

A special beach clean-up has been scheduled for a popular Kona park.

The high surf that closed virtually all West Hawaii beaches last week washed debris inland at Kahaluu Beach Park.

The Kahaluu Bay Education Center is organizing a clean-up of the area beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 4.

“The high surf last weekend pushed waves very far into the park, and along with it rocks and other debris,” said KBEC Director Cindi Punihaole. “We are asking members of the community to please kokua and help us clean and restore order to the park to ensure it remains a safe and welcoming place for local residents and visitors.”

KBEC will provide garbage bags, light-duty gloves and refreshments, but is requesting that volunteers bring rakes and heavy-duty work gloves if they have them.

Volunteers can sign up on the center’s Facebook page, or simply show up the morning of the event.

The Kahaluu Bay Education Center is a partnership of the County of Hawaii and The Kohala Center which works to enhance the natural environment of the bay through education, public outreach and research and restoration projects.
