Hurricanes Lowell, Karina to produce advisory-level surf on Big Island
A high surf advisory has been extended through Saturday morning for south- and east-facing shores of the Big Island.
Swells from Hurricane Lowell are filling in, according to the National Weather Service in Honolulu. A large, medium-period east swell from Hurricane Karina is also filling in and will continue through the weekend, producing high-end advisory-level surf or warning-level surf along east-facing shores.
Karina will produce large breaking waves building up to 7 to 10 feet along east-facing shores.
Lowell will produce 8 to 12 feet of surf along south-facing shores, which will build up to 10 to 14 feet by Saturday.
Strong breaking waves and strong currents will make swimming dangerous. The public is advised to heed all advice from ocean safety officials.
