The nonprofit Kupu, a youth-focused conservation and sustainability organization, is accepting applications for a first of its kind program to maintain and improve trails on the Kona side of the Big Island.

The program is through a new partnership with the Hawaiʻi Department of Land and Natural Resources.

Beginning this fall, the Kupu trail crews will work with the state Nā Ala Hele Trail and Access Program. The work will focus on bringing trails up to modern sustainable trail standards designed to reduce erosion, minimize impacts on natural resources, mitigate long-term maintenance, and enhance the experience for trail users.

Trail crew positions will provide hands-on experience in sustainable trail construction and maintenance, along with training in chainsaw operation, wilderness first aid, volunteer management and plant identification.

“This partnership gives us an opportunity to steward trails while also building a workforce with the skills needed to care for them into the future,” said Jackson Bauer, Hawaiʻi Island program manager for the Nā Ala Hele Trail and Access Program.

Sustainable trail construction is particularly important in Hawaiʻi, where steep terrain, rainfall and soil conditions can create significant erosion. Well-designed trails can help manage water flow, reduce erosion, and minimize impacts on surrounding ecosystems and nearshore environments.

It also is “our best way to protect these critical cultural and natural resources for future generations,” said Kaulana McCabe, Kupu vice president of programs.

Kupu will hire, train and employ three crew members and one crew leader for Hawaiʻi Island. The eight-month project is tentatively scheduled to begin in October.

This program aligns with Kupu’s mission of connecting young people with meaningful environmental work while creating pathways to long-term careers in Hawaiʻi, McCabe said.

Kupu is seeking applicants who are willing to work outdoors, learn new skills, and contribute to physically demanding trail projects. Prior trail experience is encouraged but not required.
