“I am incredibly proud of our student-athletes for setting a new standard of academic excellence this past year,” said University of Hawai‘i at Hilo Director of Athletics Patrick Guillen in a university release. “This achievement is a testament to their relentless work ethic, discipline and dedication. They prove every single day that championship performance happens both in competition and in the classroom.”

University of Hawai‘i at Hilo women’s golf (individual sport) and women’s soccer (team sport) were honored as the Ramon Goya Academic Teams of the Year for highest team grade-point averages.

The Vulcans also had top-performing programs among the Pacific West Conference, with women’s cross country achieving a combined 3.64 grade-point average, softball a combined 3.50 and men’s golf with a 3.46 — each of which finished in the top three against teams from the other PacWest schools.

“This milestone belongs to [our student-athletes], as well as the coaches, advisors, professors and staff who support their journey every step of the way,” Guillen said.

Point Loma was named winner of the PacWest Conference Academic Achievement Award, posting an overall combined 3.59 grade-point average for its fourth consecutive win.

A record 2,700 student-athletes throughout all PacWest Conference members also were named to the Academic All-PacWest Team for achieving a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.00.

The Vulcans had 172 honorees on the list.
