Mo‘oheau Bandstand in downtown Hilo will be campaign central later this month for dozens of Democratic candidates making their case for election in the upcoming Hawai‘i Primary Elections.

Hawai‘i County Democrats will host their 2026 Primary Grand Rally beginning at 5 p.m. July 25 under the bandstand gazebo next to Mo‘oheau Bus Terminal on Kamehameha Avenue. Hawai‘i Gov. Josh Green and Hawai‘i County Mayor Kimo Alameda will be featured speakers during the event.
All Democrats seeking public office and who will appear on the Aug. 8 primary election ballot — including those running for open statewide positions, Big Island state legislative seats, Hawai’i County Council posts and Office of Hawaiian Affairs board seats — are invited to participate.
The rally tradition — which began 70-some years ago — is more than just a chance for candidates to speak directly with voters. Community members before they vote get an opportunity to hear from the candidates themselves, in-person, about their priorities and platforms.
Candidates and their supporters also will sign-wave along Kamehameha Avenue during the hour prior to the rally, which is expected to last about 2 hours.
There is no charge to attend.
Longtime emcee Andy Kahili will kick off the rally, which will also include a traditional taiko drum performance by Hui Okinawa Kobudo Taiko before candidates take the stage.

The event offers a chance to get involved in the community and connect with fellow Democratic supporters.
Voter registration resources also will be available on-site to help people who still need to register, and anyone attending who is not a Democratic Party member can learn how to join and make their voice heard.
Hawai‘i County Democrats had their first Grand Rally in the 1950s. The event continues to be a signature Big Island election year gathering of politics and recognized statewide.
It was historically hosted the Friday night before state primary elections, but the rally now is scheduled about 2 weeks earlier so voters can engage with candidates at about the time primary election ballots arrive in the mail.
“Everyone is welcome,” says the Hawai‘i County Democrats website about the rally. “Come be part of the movement!”
