Hawai‘i Island police report 12 DUI arrests islandwide during the week of June 8-14

During the week of June 8 through June 14, Hawai‘i Island police arrested 12 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant, with most arrests occurring in Hilo.

Out of the 12 drivers, four were involved in a traffic accident, and three of the drivers were under the age of 21, according to a news release from the Hawai‘i Police Department.

So far this year, there have been 355 DUI arrests compared with 432 during the same period last year. This is a decrease of 17.82%.

Hilo had five arrests. South Kohala, Kona and Ka‘ū Districts had two DUI arrests. The Puna District reported one.

Hawai‘i Police Department’s Traffic Services Section reviewed all updated crashes and found 449 major crashes so far this year, compared with 484 major crashes during the same time last year, a decrease of 7.23%.

As of June 14, there were 14 fatal crashes, resulting in 16 fatalities, compared with 12 fatal crashes, resulting in 13 fatalities for the same time last year. This is an increase of 16.67% for fatal crashes and 23.08% for fatalities.

In 2026, the non-traffic fatality count (not on a public roadway) was zero, compared to zero non-traffic fatalities for the same time last year.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island-wide.
