Hawai‘i Island police continue concentrated traffic enforcement of Daniel K. Inouye Highway
Concentrated traffic enforcement on a section of Daniel K. Inouye Highway continues following multiple collisions that have led to several fatalities on Hawai‘i Island’s main inter-island thoroughfare.
Between June 8 and June 14, Hawai‘i Island police officers made 450 vehicle stops and identified numerous traffic violations, including:
- 327 speeding violations
- 5 reckless driving violations
- 2 unsafe passing violations
- 287 other traffic violations
Enforcement efforts have also resulted in four arrests; two for driving under the influence of an intoxicant and two for other offenses, including driving without a license, resisting arrest and criminal littering.
From Jan. 1 through June 4, 2026, there have been three fatal crashes on DKI, resulting in five deaths, compared to no fatal crashes on the highway for the same period last year. On June 5, the Hawai‘i Department of Transportation declared a traffic emergency zone on the highway between mile markers 5.5 and 28.
The Hawai‘i Police Department and the Hawai‘i Department of Transportation are working together to enhance safety on the Big Island’s roadways, however, police officials say creating safer highways is a shared responsibility.
“We encourage everyone to help ‘Heal Our Highways’ by driving with aloha, practicing courtesy, and making safe choices behind the wheel. Always wear your seatbelt, avoid distractions, obey speed limits, and drive sober,” officials stated in a news release on Tuesday.
