A high surf warning issued for the south-facing shores of Hawai‘i Island continues today and into the early morning hours on Tuesday, June 15.

Kahalu‘u Beach Park, Kohanaiki Beach Park and Old Kona Airport Park are closed.

The combination of a large, long-period south-southwest (200-degree) swell and King Tides has caused significant wave run-up and could lead to widespread coastal flooding during the afternoon high tides along south-facing shores, according to the National Weather Service in Honolulu.

Wave heights of 10 to 15 have been reported.

Also, due to the highest monthly tides and water levels running higher than predicted at select areas, flooding along all shorelines and in low-lying coastal areas is expected, especially during the late afternoon and early evening hours.
