Hilo man faces firearms, drug charges after large amount of cocaine, loaded firearm found in Kona hotel room
Hawai‘i Island police arrested and charged a 32-year-old Hilo man with multiple firearms and drug offenses stemming from an incident last week that began with a report of possible child neglect and eventually led to the execution of a search warrant and discovery of a large amount of cocaine and loaded firearm in a Kona hotel room.

Hawai‘i Police Department reports Steven Campos is charged with:
- Ownership or possession prohibited (firearm).
- Ownership or possession prohibited (ammunition).
- Possession of a prohibited weapon (high-capacity magazine).
- Manufacturing, purchasing or obtaining firearm parts to assemble a firearm having no serial number.
- First-degree promoting a dangerous drug.
- First-degree attempted promoting a dangerous drug.
His total bail is set at $120,000. Campos is scheduled to make his initial court appearance July 2 in Hilo District Court.
Kona Patrol officers responded at 12:42 a.m. June 3 to a hotel in the 75-5600 block of Palani Road in Kailua-Kona following a report involving possible child neglect.
An unsupervised toddler wandering through the hotel parking lot was found when officers arrived. Further investigation revealed an additional 11 children also left unsupervised.
Officers determined when the parents returned that the 12 children belonged to two couples. All four parents — including Campos — were arrested for second-degree reckless endangering.
Hotel staff after the arrests entered the room rented by the parties and discovered a firearm. Police subsequently secured the room and obtained a search warrant.
Detectives with Hawai‘i Police Department Area II Criminal Investigation Section executed the search warrant and recovered a loaded firearm, about 440 grams — or nearly 1 pound — of cocaine and a large amount of cash.
The other three adults were each charged with second-degree reckless endangering and later released after posting bail.
