He blazed his way to victory with standout performances throughout the competition.

Penesa claimed the top spot in the elite men’s division, outperforming Hikitahi Piokoe of Arue, Tahiti, who placed second, and Kenshi Jordan of Ishigaki, Japan, who finished third.

The championship round followed an intense opening night of competition, with an opening field of 20 contestants.

This year’s World Fireknife Championship featured competitions in four divisions.

Emi Iliganoa Pritchard of Auckland, New Zealand, won the women’s division. Mamalu Lilo of ʻEwa Beach, O‘ahu, won the intermediate division for ages 12 to 17 years old and Mathias Svenson of Tahiti won the junior division for ages 6 to 11 years old.

The World Fireknife Championship, now in its 33rd year, was founded in 1993 by Polynesian Cultural Center to honor and preserve the proud tradition of Samoan fire knife dancing, a thrilling art form blending skill, artistry and courage which continues to inspire new generations to carry it forward.

Modern fire knife dance is rooted in the ancient Samoan ‘ailao — a warrior’s knife dance performed before battle — and pays tribute to the origin with the use of the nifo‘oti, or “tooth of death.”
