No injuries reported after domestic dispute escalated to a barricaded man in South Kona
A domestic dispute in South Kona, Tuesday night, escalated to a man who barricaded himself inside a residence for several hours.
Hawai‘i Island Police Assistant Chief Rio Amon-Wilkins said Kona Patrol officers initially responded to the domestic incident in Captain Cook off of Hawai‘i Belt Road shortly after 8:30 p.m.
When they arrived on scene, officers discovered the 43-year-old man had barricaded himself inside a home and was armed with several firearms, Amon-Wilkins said Wednesday.
The crisis negotiation team was called out, and the man surrendered to police without incident at around 11:18 p.m.
There were no reported injuries.
A 2-year-old child was present at the time of the domestic incident along with two adults, a 47-year-old woman and a 58-year-old man.
Hawai‘i Belt Road, also known as Highway 11, between mile markers 103 and 104 was closed for a few hours as police worked to resolve the situation.
Amon-Wilkins said police did secure a search warrant for the residence and officers were on scene this morning.
The man remains in custody at this time. This story will be updated as more information becomes available.
