As the temperature becomes warmer in the spring and summer, more kittens are being born across the island and has caused the Hawaiʻi Island Humane Society shelters to hit capacity with cats six months old and over.

To help alleviate shelter space, the cats are throwing party called, “Caturday at Scruffee’s Cat Barn” from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Animal Community Center in Holualoa.

“There are a high volume of kittens every where and they are easy to come by, so there is lower interest for older cats over six months old,” Lauren Nickerson said. “This event is to specifically spotlight these adult cats with $0 adoption fees.”

No appointments are necessary and the Hawaiʻi Island Humane Society is encouraging people to walk in to see the Animal Community Center, visit the cat barn and get to know some of the cats that are up for adoption.

“All of our cats have been medically and behaviorally evaluated and are wonderful, friendly feline friends. All our staff love the cats,” Nickerson said. “We are seeing them have longer stays in the shelter, and spending longer in care, so we hope to find them loving homes because they are all great companions.”

Nickerson also hopes “Caturday” gives the community an opportunity to see the facility in Holualoa and hopes some are interested in volunteer opportunities through the shelters.

“I feel like there are still people who don’t know we are here, so I hope getting the word out about $0 adoptions helps more people find us, ” Nickerson said. “They can check out the cat barn, they can come snuggle with kittens, learn about fostering and all our ʻcatiosʻ will be open with light refreshments available.”

Since there have been so many kitten litters, the Hawaiʻi Island Humane Society is hoping the event helps clear capacity to make space for more incoming kittens that are not adoption ready yet.

“Truthfully, animals should not be spending as much time in animal shelters as they do, but there is a match for everyone out there.” Nickerson said. “We will have cats of all kinds, with all types of personalities of all ages and types available during the event ready to bring a new companion home.”

While there are no appointments and no charge, adopters will still need to fill out an application for prescreening, which can be done at the same time as the adoption.
