Aloha Theatre announces auditions for its upcoming musical

The Aloha Theatre in Kainaliu is hosting a boot camp before opening auditions for “Seussical” at the end of the month.

Aloha Theatre has posted an audition form, sides, and a rehearsal calendar on its website. The audition prep boot camp is set for 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, May 23, and is open for registration to those interested in auditioning for the musical.

During the workshop, directors, choreographers, and the music director will provide tips and highlight important features of the fast-paced show.

“Seussical” is a musical that weaves together Dr. Seuss stories, primarily focusing on Horton the Elephant’s mission to save the tiny planet of Whoville, located on a speck of dust. Guided by The Cat in the Hat, Horton faces ridicule and danger to protect the Whos and an abandoned egg, championing friendship, loyalty, and individuality.

The roles available include:

  • The Cat in the Hat – Male or Female | Teen to Young Adult
    • As the show’s narrator and guide, this role requires strong comedic timing, physicality, and the ability to engage the audience with dynamic storytelling.
  • Jojo – Male or Female (played as male) | Child to Teen
    • Requires strong emotional honesty, playful energy, and the ability to balance whimsy with moments of sincerity.
  • Horton the Elephant – Male | Teen to Young Adult
    • A sincere and grounding presence in the show who conveys vulnerability and unwavering conviction.
  • Gertrude McFuzz – Female | Teen to Young Adult
    • Requires warmth, comedic sensitivity, and the ability to show emotional transformation.
  • Mayzie La Bird Female | Teen to Adult
    • Strong stage presence and comedic flair are key to this character.
  • Sour Kangaroo – Female | Teen to Adult
    • Requires strong vocals, attitude, and comedic bite.
  • Young Kangaroo – Male or Female | Child
    • A fun, spirited role that requires confidence and personality.
  • Mr. Mayor of Whoville – Male | Teen to Adult
    • Requires good comedic instincts and the ability to portray urgency and heart.
  • Mrs. Mayor of Whoville – Female | Teen to Adult
    • Often the grounding presence for the Mayor, with warmth and quiet strength.
  • General Genghis Khan Schmitz – Male | Teen to Adult) 
    • Often played with heightened comedic intensity, the role requires strong physicality, vocal authority, and a flair for over-the-top discipline.
  • Wickersham Brothers – Any and all
    • Strong dancers with comedic timing and big personalities are ideal for the trio that often function as a unit with tight harmonies and synchronized movement.

Auditions will be held on Monday, May 25, and Wednesday, May 27. Times must be reserved online, and performers will be notified about callbacks by Thursday, May 28.

Those auditioning must sing 18 bars of one song, preferably a song from the show sung by the character the performer is interested in playing. However, 16 to 18 bars of any song works as long as it fits within the style of the show.

Each performer will also read pages from the script and may be asked to stay and read or sing for multiple characters. Those not singing a song from the show are asked to bring their own music, either a recording or sheet music.

All auditions and callbacks will be held at Aloha Theatre at 79-7384 Māmalahoa Highway in Kealakekua. Performers of all genders, ethnicities, religious backgrounds, and body types, as well as persons with disabilities or special needs, are welcome and encouraged to audition.
